StockTwits: A “How To” Guide

We are tickled to have a bunch of new followers over the past couple days and figured it would be a great time for us to provide a simple How To guide for the newbies.

So here goes…

1. Make sure you are following StockTwits on Twitter.  You can do this here.

2.  How To Post to StockTwits:  There are two ways to get your tweets picked up by the StockTwits Stream and both involve the $ as a tagging system.

First, if you are tweeting about a specific stock, you simply add the $ to the begining of the ticker like this $AMZN

Second, if you are not mentioning a specific ticker but talking about the market in general or producing some market commentary then you simply put two dollar signs at the very end of your tweet like this. $$

Here is Howard explaining how to post in a video.

3. The StockTwits Streams:  There are 5 different streams on StockTwits that you may choose from which give you different filters so that you can customize which StockTweets you want to see.

You can find and choose these streams on the drop down menu right below the tweet entry box on stocktwits.com.

The All Stream gives you an automatically refreshing feed of all tweets that get posted to StockTwits. You will get a ton of information from this and see tweets on everything from daytrading to currencies to global macro etc.

The Commentary Stream gives you only Stocktweets that are not associated with a specific ticker.  Often, Commentary tweets relate to macro views, economic takes and opinions etc.

The Portfolio Stream allows you to choose which stocks you would like to follow.

The Friends Stream allows you to follow only those whom you have chosen to follow.

The Recommended Stream allows you to follow the StockTwits members that we recommend.  This is far from an exhaustive list of great talent but provides a way fro you to get started building a group that you like to follow.

4. The Pop Out: In this video, Soren provides a nice description of how you can use our pop out feature to organize your desktop with various StockTwits streams.

5. StockTwits Etiquette: Here is a great video from Howard in which he explains a bit about how people behave on our site.

6. This blog post explains our spam policy.

7. Here is the StockTwits State of the Union featuring Howard and Soren.
